Tree Identification 10 Oct 1999
Briefing by Dr Yap
As an introduction to the tree identification programme, Dr Yap
briefed members on the important features used for identification of plants.
Participants included some students from around Ipoh.
Dr Yap Son Keong
Dr Yap Son Keong, the leader for this activity, was formerly with
FRIM, Forest Research Institute of Malaysia.
Study of leaves
The characteristics of the leaves are important in helping us identify
trees. You can have simple or compound leaves. Various vein patterns and
odour are also useful for tree identification.
Study of bark
The tree bark is also useful in identifying a tree. Its surface
(whether smooth or rough) and whether it produces latex are features to
look for. Another important part to determine species is the flower.
Coppersmith Barbet
Speaking of trees, one would invariably link them up with birds.
Participants were treated to a close-range acrobatic display by this Coppersmith
Barbet.
Refreshments
At the end, participants were treated to sumptuous refreshments,
courtesy of the Ipoh City Council.
